Undertrial prisoner dies in MKCG

Berhampur: An undertrial prisoner, serving in Kodala sub-jail on the charges of smuggling liquor, breathed his last while undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here Monday.

The deceased was identified as Jaya Palei of Anam Belpada village under Kodala police limits in Ganjam district.

While the precise reason of the death of the undertrial is yet to be known, Kodala sub-jail superintendent Prakash Kumar Panigrahy said the reason will be clear after they receive the post-mortem report.

According to the case diary, Palei was arrested by excise officials while he was smuggling country liquor May 18. After the court rejected his bail plea, he was remanded to the sub-jail.

All of a sudden, his condition deteriorated while he was asleep Sunday night. On being informed, the jail authorities rushed him to Kodala community health centre (CHC), but there was no improvement in his condition.

Later, he was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur where he succumbed to his ailment while undergoing treatment Monday morning.

A case of unnatural death was registered and the body sent for post-mortem. When contacted, jail superintendent said that Palei was an alcoholic and he might have died as he could not get to drink in the jail premises, Panigrahy added.
