New Delhi, June 14: In the wake of launch of Smart Cities Mission, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued instructions to all varsities across the country to introduce ‘urban planning’ in the syllabi of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
In a missive to the vice-chancellors of all universities, the UGC has emphasised that towns and cities are emerging as key drivers of economic growth, hence the growth model of a city should form an essential part of its vision.
The Prime Minister has launched Smart Cities Mission unveiling the roadmap for development of 500 cities. Smart Cities Mission is an urban renewal and retrofitting programme by the Centre with a mission to develop 500 cities all over the country making them citizen-friendly and sustainable.
Recently, the Prime Minister during a presentation suggested that towns and cities are emerging as key drivers of growth, hence the economic growth model of a city should form an essential part of its vision. He underscored the need for capacity building in urban administration and urban planning.
The UGC has suggested that colleges and universities should start courses on urban planning. The university should also issue relevant instructions to the colleges/institutions affiliated to it to take steps to launch this course at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
