Malkangiri: In an unfortunate incident, a vasectomy was conducted on an unmarried tribal youth from Ambaguda village under Mahupadar panchayat and Mathili block in Malkangiri district. According to reports, the ASHA lured Ganga Durua (26), a divyang, by promising him an allowance and brought him to Mathili Sub-divisional Hospital August 3, where a vasectomy was carried out on him. Following the operation, Durua was given some medicines and Rs 2,000.
Shockingly, his marital status was mentioned as ‘married’ by the ASHA in the surgery-related document, sources said. It has been alleged that the vasectomy was done by the concerned Health department staffers without his knowledge in order to increase the number of vasectomies in the area. As the matter came to the fore, locals demanded stringent against the accused officials. “The operation was carried out on the basis of an ASHA’s report. His mother was present at the healthcare facility during the operation. I have ordered the concerned authorities to carry out an investigation into the incident. Strict action will be taken against anybody found guilty,” said Prafulla Nanda, CDMO, Malkangiri.
