Ganjam: Notorious criminal Sukant Behera alias Koko was injured in an encounter with the police at Jayashree square under Ganjam police limits here in the wee hours of Saturday.
The wanted criminal, a resident of Goshani Nuagaon area here, sustained bullet injuries on his left leg following which he was first admitted to Chhatrapur sub divisional hospital and then shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after his condition deteriorated.
Police recovered two live bullets and a pistol from his possession.
Several cases are pending against him at different police stations, police said. He is the prime accused in a case of bomb hurling on BJD leader and MP’s representative Sudhir Padhy, inspector-in-charge Sudam Mallick informed.
Police sources said, they were tipped off about the presence of Koko at Jayashree square. A team of Ganjam police conducted a raid on the spot. Seeing the cops, he tried to flee to evade arrest leading to an exchange of fire.
