Cuttack, April 11: The Cuttack district administration has erected a warning board at Jobra barrage where four students from Ravenshaw University had drowned April 1.
The move has been welcomed by students of Ravenshaw as well as locals. The stretch between Jobra and Chahata ghat along the Mahanadi river bank has become a death trap for people, with at least 10 people drowning in the last one year at the spot.
“The setting up of the board was long overdue. It could have saved many lives,” said Bansidhar Behera, a Jobra resident.
“We had demanded the district collector to install fences and a warning board at the bank so that further deaths could be avoided. The collector had promised to install warning boards within four days and finally it has been set up,” said Manish Kumar, a student of Ravenshaw.
The area, according to sources, will be a ‘no go zone’ for the public. The authorities will assess the depth of the river at its bank along the whole stretch and issue warnings through more boards and barricades along the bank, said sources.
