Bargarh: Tension prevailed at the district headquarters hospital here as a woman died reportedly due to medical negligence after giving birth to a baby boy Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Subhalekha Sahu (25), wife of Mahadev Sahu, of Birmal village under Bargarh block. Family members claimed that she died due to a delay in conduct of caesarean section and lack of care after the surgery.
Family members and locals brought the body to the road in front of the hospital and staged blockade. The road blockade severely hit traffic.
Later, they brought back the body inside the hospital where additional district medical officer (ADMO) Dr Suresh Kumar Tripathy reached the spot and held talks with the protesters while receiving a memorandum from the husband of the deceased.
Tripathy assured them of action in this direction after receiving the post-mortem report and a probe report over the alleged medical negligence.
Sources said Subhalekha was rushed to the hospital in a Janani Express at 10 pm Sunday after she experienced labour pain. She was admitted to the Matru Mangal Kendra of the hospital where she was kept on the floor by the staff citing lack of beds. Monday, a gynaecologist conducted a check up on her and advised for operation. Later, she was taken to the operation theatre where she delivered a baby boy at 10.45 am after a caesarean section was performed on her. She and her newborn were taken to the post-partum care unit after the delivery where she regained her consciousness at 5pm.
The mother and the newborn were doing well but soon she started shivering and asked for water. Her husband contacted the nurses in the absence of doctors and was advised to give her water.
Subhalekha’s condition deteriorated after drinking the water and administration of an injection by a nurse, it was learnt. She died later, her family said. PNN
