Bargarh: In a freak mishap, a utility pole when being repaired by the energy department personnel fell on a passerby at Gandhi Chhak here Friday, killing her on the spot.
The deceased was identified as Shurubali Biswal of Katapali under Town police limits.
She had come to Gaisima with her son Sanjiv and nephew Ranjit on a bike for some work. The incident took place when she was returning home.
The mishap sparked tension in the area with the locals demanding compensation for the deceased and arrest of the Wesco personnel responsible for the incident.
They also staged a blockade at Gandhi Chhak and refused to relent till their demands are met.
The woman’s body was brought to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem.
Bargarh SP Mukeshl Kumar Bhamu, ADM Tapiram Majhi, ASP Jasobanta Senapati and SDPO Suresh Kumar Naik were pacifying the irate mob when this report was filed.
