Cuttack: A woman died and her husband sustained grievous injuries in an accident near Sompur on Cuttack-Paradip road Monday.
The deceased was identified as Puspalata Bastia (40) of Gelapur in Biridi police limits of Jagatsinghpur district.
According to sources, Puspalata and her husband Sanjay Bastia,45, were on their way to Cuttack on a motorcycle when a vehicle hit them from behind. The couple skidded off the road and sustained severe injuries, said Cuttack Sadar police.
The driver of an SUV which was coming behind the four-wheeler suddenly applied brake following the accident and turned over. The driver, however, escaped unhurt.
Although an ambulance was called in, it reached the spot 45 minutes late. The couple was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital where doctors pronounced the woman dead.
Some locals staged a road blockade near Sompur over the incident. The blockade was withdrawn following intervention of the police.
