Cuttack: A woman from Dharmasala in Jajpur district Wednesday lodged a complaint with the grievance cell of Director General of Police (DGP), alleging laxity by Crime Branch (CB), which was supposed to probe the alleged rape and murder of her 20-year-old girl.
Even though more than a year has elapsed to the DGP handing over the probe to the CB, the latter is yet to initiate the investigation, prompting the culprits to roam freely. Besides, some unscrupulous policemen have been shielding the accused for the last seven years.
According to sources, the girl’s body was recovered from her house near Estama Ground at Brahmabarada village in Dharmasala police limits April 20, 2011. A profusely bleeding victim’s mother was rescued from the house too.
The complainant stated that some persons attacked her daughter with sharp weapons and when she resisted, the attackers also tried to kill her. She sustained grievous injuries in the attack and was admitted to the district headquarters hospital.
The complainant further alleged that even though the accused raped her daughter before hacking her to death, police refused to register it as a rape case. Dharmasala police registered a case (87/2011) under Sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC in this regard.
The failure of the police to nab the accused prompted the victim’s mother to lodge a complaint with DGP after she was assisted by members of National Union of Backward Classes. The complainant urged the DGP to take steps to expedite the investigation process.
The Odisha in-charge of National Union of Backward Classes, Sanjit Samal, said, “The DGP had handed over the case to the CB December 4, 2016. However, there is no headway.” Samal has urged the top cop to provide compensation to the victim’s mother.
Expressing concern over the issue, Additional Director General (ADG) Satyajit Mohanty has sought the details of the case from Jajpur superintendent of police (SP). When asked, Jajpur SP Charan Singh Meena said, “The charge-sheet of the case has been submitted and the accused will be nabbed soon.”
