Chhendipada: A woman from an area near Krushnaprasad in Puri district has launched a sit-in in front of a youth’s house, seeking daughter-in-law status at a village near Chhendipada in Angul district from Saturday.
The woman alleged that she and the youth were lovers and got married in a court but her in-laws were not accepting her as their daughter-in-law.
According to the woman, she fell in love with a youth in Bhubaneswar. In 2015, they got married at a court in Angul district. After the youth’s family members refused to accept her as their daughter-in-law, they used to stay in a rented house in Bhubaneswar.
Things were normal till March 2017 when her husband went to his house leaving her alone. Following her complaint, the Odisha State Commission for Women intervened and the problem was sorted out following which the youth’s family invited the girl to their home.
The woman arrived at her in-laws’ home Saturday but to her utter dismay she found the house was locked. Upon inquiry, she came to know that all the family members have been absconded.
Chhendipada IIC Nirmala Gochhayat said the woman was taken to her in-laws’ house with the help of Odisha State Commission for Women and an NGO. But they couldn’t find the family members at home. The youth’s family had been summoned to the police station earlier but they had not turned up, she said, adding that the village president has been asked to take care of the woman.
“If the family members do not turn up or the problem is not sorted out, steps would be taken according to the law,” she pointed out.
