Konark: Police recovered the naked body of a woman near Rajaram Mutt here Tuesday morning after some locals spotted it in front of a paan shop, with a handkerchief tied around the neck.
On being informed Puri superintendent of police (SP), Sarthak Sarangi, and Nimapara DSP, Niranjan Padhi, reached the spot accompanied by a scientific team and a sniffer dog squad and launched a probe.
Sources said the sniffer dogs rounded up a man identified as Kalia, who works in a nearby eatery. The man has been detained by police for interrogation, it is learnt.
According to preliminary investigation, miscreants ransacked the shanty Monday night, in which the mentally challenged woman was living and threw away her belongings. It is suspected that the woman was later raped and killed near the paan shop, police said.
On being asked, Konark IIC Sanjeev Kumar Pradhan said, “A case (2/18) of unnatural death has been registered and the body has been sent for post-mortem to Puri district headquarters hospital.” He added that further investigations are underway.
The woman was staying in a shanty near the mutt for the past eight years. Earlier the woman was attacked and assaulted in the nearby mutt premises February 2, 2016 and a complaint was also filed with the Konark police, but the cops allegedly took no action in this regard.
