Wrong spelling of ‘Mahatma’ in Odia text books

Padmapur: As the nation celebrated the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi from Tuesday, anomalies found in Odia text books have hurt the sentiments of intellectuals and Gandhians.

According to reports, the Odia text books published by the school and mass education department contain scores of anomalies with regard to wrong spellings of ‘Mahatma Gandhi’. This has created confusion in the minds of schoolchildren and embarrassed them.

It is known, in the Odia text books including ‘Hasakhusi’ for Class-II, ‘Ama Bhasa O’ Ama Sahitya’ and ‘Jana Ajana’ both for Class-III and ‘Sahitya Kusuma’ for Class-V there are mentions of Gandhiji.

Similarly, the Odia text books namely ‘Hasakhela’ (part-2) for Class-I, ‘Sahitya Kalika’ for Class-IV, ‘Ganita Dhara’ for Class-V have pictures of Bapuji along with mention of his name, reports said.

However, in text books from Class-II to Class V, the name of Gandhiji is improperly mentioned as ‘MahatmaGandhi’ in page-72, ‘Mahatm Gandhi’ in page-74, ‘Mahatna Gandhi’ in page-76, ‘Maahatma Gandhi’ in page-78 and ‘Mahatma Gndhi’ in page-82, respectively.

Parents have strongly resented this kind of mistakes saying, ‘these text books need to be corrected immediately and the state government should be careful before publishing such books’.
