Bhubaneswar, June 23: The fashion world is known for experimentation. One such experiment that is finding more takers today is fusion, that is, a blend of traditional and Western styles.
Leading fashion designers in the city told Orissa POST that this style is a big hit among youngsters.
“Campus styles are changing fast. A new movie can change the current trend in just a day. However, fusion style caters to the likes of both traditional and western wear users at the same time. A kurta top with jeans or a churidar with denim leggings are common examples of this style,” Anamika Sethy, a fashion designer based in Bhubaneswar, said.
However, fusion is more popular among girls than boys. “The current generation has its feet planted in the traditional as well as western styles. Fusion style is a product of this lifestyle. At present, the fashion world offers more styles for girls whereas for boys it offers limited choices. We are trying to infuse new fusion for men too,” Reemly Mohanty, another fashion designer, said. Interestingly, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is a famous patron of fusion style. In many of his public appearances, the actor has worn white kurtas over blue jeans.
Orissa POST also interacted with members of the new generation to know what they felt about the style.
“Traditional wear such as the sari are not always comfortable for college or office-goers. Compared with the sari, churidar is more comfortable, but everyone likes to have some change in styles and fusion is a product of that change,” Reshmi Mohanty, a college student, said.
Many boys regard fusion as the best choice for parties and special occasions.
“Traditional wear such as Nehru jacket or kurta are good for special occasions. But, when you wear these along with western wear, it creates a different look. It is always a good choice for college functions,” Sitanshu Pradhan, an engineering student, said.
However members of older generations find fusion a “confusion trend”.
“I am not against any fashion trend. But I believe mixing western and traditional styles kills the identity of both styles. So the new generation is sometimes confused and this fusion may be a reflection of that confusion,” Prabhakar Jena, a senior citizen, said.
Leading fashion magazines have reported good sale for fusion jewellery and dresses. Some, for instance, report great demand for gold-platinum fusion wedding rings.
