Birajakhetra: A local court Wednesday awarded a life sentence to 25-year-old Bishnu Prasad (25) after convicting him of murdering his mother Susila Prasad (46) for money.
Additional district and sessions judge Rohitlal Panda awarded the life sentence and imposed a penalty of `10, 000 on Bishnu. He would undergo an additional one-year jail if he failed to deposit the amount, the court declared.
According to the case diary, Bishnu is the only son of Susila and Ramprasad of Purtinagar village under Kaliapani police limits in Jajpur district.
Susila became a widow after Ramprasad died eight years ago. Since then she took care of Bishnu alone with her widow pensions and by doing odd jobs. However, Bishnu was a wanderer and did not do any work. He forcibly took his mother’s pension and spent it on anti-social activities.
Susila made every effort to change Bishnu but in vain. Bishnu continued with his bad habits and mingled with looters, dacoits and kept bad companies. The incident occurred August 31, 2014 morning.
Bishnu demanded money from Susila to which the latter declined. Losing temper, Bishnu took a sharp-edged weapon from the house and attacked Susila leading to her death on the spot.
On learning the incident, neighbours rushed to the spot and overpowered Bishnu while he was trying to escape after the crime. They alerted Susila’s brother Papu Singh who lodged a written complaint in Kaliapani police station.
Police registered a murder case and arrested Bishnu. He was later produced in court. The
judge pronounced the verdict after examining the statements of 14 witnesses in the case. Senior lawyer Rajendra Prasad Nayak handled the case. PNN
