Rourkela: A village youth was shot dead while three of his friends were rendered critical in a firing by unidentified miscreants at the Rourkela-Kusumadihi main road near Barsuan village, off Koida, in Sundargarh district Tuesday night. Maoists were suspected to be behind the attack.
The deceased was Sunil Munda (28) while the injured were his three friends — Piyush Munda, Francis Munda and Tuicha Munda. They were on their way back home after attending a funeral.
All of a sudden, some miscreants opened fire at them. A bullet struck Sunil, leading to his death on the spot while the three others were critically wounded.
The miscreants fled after the firing. Hearing the sound of fire, locals rushed to the spot and found the youths lying on the main road. They alerted the police.
The reason for the attack was yet to be ascertained. Rumours did rounds that it was an act of the Maoists. A probe has been launched.
