Digapahandi: A youth, who was recently out from jail, was shot at allegedly by his grandfather over his love affair with his maternal uncle’s daughter at Damodarpur village under this block in Ganjam district Friday night.
The injured youth was identified as Sanatan Mallick in the village. He was first rushed to the Digapahandi community health centre and later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after his condition deteriorated, K Nuagaon IIC Sujit Kumar Nayak said.
Mallick sustained critical injuries after three bullets fired by his grandfather pierced both his legs. Mallick’s family members and that of his grandfather have absconded after the incident.
Reports claimed that the accused shot his grandson after being fed up with his wayward behaviour.
Sources said Mallick was in love with his cousin, the daughter of his maternal uncle which was not to the liking of his grandfather’s family. This resulted in a fight between the two families following which Mallick and his maternal uncle were rendered critical in each other’s attack. Police arrested Mallick and sent him to jail over a complaint by his grandfather’s family.
Mallick returned from jail four months back and again renewed his relationship with his cousin.
The incident occurred after Mallick questioned his grandfather on abusing his mother Friday. Enraged, his grandfather picked up a country gun from his house and shot at his grandson.
