Rayagada: Rina Mallik (25), an active woman Maoist working with Niyamgiri Dalam of this district, headed by divisional committee commandant Maoist leader Bunty Wednesday surrendered before SP K Shiva Subramani.
The surrendered Maoist, the daughter of Pratima and Sania Mallik, is a native of Petakiari village under Bhanjanagar block of Ganjam, the SP said, adding she joined Ghumsar division under Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda in 2008. She worked with Panda till 2011 and later started working under Bunty after her marriage with another Maoist Bikash alias Sunil.
At present, she is pregnant with Bikash’s child, the police said.
Rina was involved in several violent incidents and was given several names including Laxmi, Ranjita and Mitedaka during separate operations.
Among the major cases she was involved in were firing at police on Ganjam-Kandhamal border, assault on district voluntary force at Dhamanpanga in Rayagada in 2014, attack on police at Sapachanchada in Rayagada in 2015 and police-ultras gun battle at Dangamati of Rayagada in 2016.
Vikash and Bunty tried to abort the child against her will, Rina told police. There are at least six women in Niyamgiri Dalam whose jobs are limited to cooking and entertaining the ultras, she added. The women ultras are never allowed to speak about their problems and not provide decent food and clothes, Rina revealed.
Despite leading such miserable lives, the women are always kept at the forefront to face the problem, it was learnt.
Failing to cope with the terrible lifestyle she decided to join the mainstream of society by surrendering before the police, Rina said in the presence of media persons.
The surrendered ultra would be rehabilitated as per the policy of the state government, the SP said.
The district police have put up hoardings at several places requesting the rebels to reject the path of violence and join mainstream of society to lead decent lives. PNN
