Malkangiri: More than 1,600 students in this district have wound up their studies after failing to clear the matriculation examinations, a report said.
A study also revealed that though about 15,000 kids get enrolled at primary school level, only 40 per cent eventually appear for the Class X examination conducted by Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha.
This indicates that crores of rupees spent for the spread of education is yet to serve the purpose, said some educationists.
In the last academic session, 5,968 students had appeared in the Class X final examination and 3,540 managed to clear it. Even as there are opportunities for the failed students to pass through supplementary examination, most prefer not to appear, it was learnt.
Of the 2,428 failed students, only 962 had filled up forms to take the supplementary examination. But still 60 of them didn’t turn up for the examination that began Friday.
This adds up to a total of 1,666 students who have neither readmitted to Class X nor appeared for the supplementary examinations this year.
It also reflects that every year thousands of students wind up studies midway after their failure in Class X examination.
The onus is now on the government to find out the circumstances in which such a large number of kids had left studies, many conscious citizens said.
Many were of the view that studies no more hold interest for some students while there are a few others who fear to appear in examinations and discontinue their studies.
Similarly, there are many who flee to other states to earn and support their families. There are many instances of minor boys getting tortured and going missing in other states.
It is high time the government organised programmes and counselling sessions to prevent such large number of students from giving up studies, said some teachers of Malkangiri district.
