2 looters thrashed by locals for loot

Patrapur: Locals Saturday detained two persons and thrashed them after tying them to a pole after they were caught stealing gold from a jewellery shop.

One of their aides managed to escape with some gold ornaments, it was learnt. The incident was reported from Patrapur Square here in Ganjam district.

The detained persons were identified as Bishnu Das (45) of Jugiapali village under Kukudakhandi block and Brundaban Gouda (40) of Palasi village under Hinjilicut block.

According to sources, the two with their aide arrived at the shop. They asked the owner to display gold ornaments on the pretext of buying them. While the owner was busy displaying ornaments, one of the accused grabbed the ornaments and fled from the spot.

However, before the two could escape, the owner raised an alarm following which locals gathered and overpowered the duo. The two were then tied to a pole and thrashed black and blue before being handed over to the police.

A case was registered and a manhunt was launched to arrest the absconder. The looted gold ornaments are worth Rs 85,000, the owner said. “All check-posts have been sealed and the miscreant will be arrested soon,” a police officer said.
