Bhubaneswar: Merchandises for interior decoration or simply Home decors have caught people’s attention these days. As festivities loom, the market buzzes with several fancy products and attractive merchandises. Orissa post interacted with some interior decorators and buyers to analyse what really draws the consumers. We also tried to gauge the recent trends in interior designing.

Bidyutnalini Patnaik, an interior designer, said that a home is like a canvas which is painted on by the owner. However, keeping the target consumers in mind, the market is stacking up with Budget home decorations like  Wind chimes, Mason Jars for candles, interior garden with pebbles, Vastu mirrors, Rajasthani paintings, Wooden tea light set, Rajasthani Lamps, Vastu Ganesh idols, wooden plant holders among others. All the above products are within the budget of the common man, she added.

Influence of Vastu Decors: Interior designer Chitra Mallick said that nowadays everyone is decorating their home according to the ancient Vastu science. From putting fengsui products in the doorway to decorating Lord Ganesh at the entrance, the list goes on. Adorning doors with Darwajabandh Vastu is also a common sight at many homes. The ideas are meant to bring prosperity, health and prestige to the family which owns the house. The demand for these products in the market is huge. Abundance of these products in the market drives their prices down. This makes it affordable for the common man. A glossy living wall boasting a huge wall art seems to be the new rage.

Pranati Swain, a buyer of home decors, said, “I often buy small statues, water fountains, mason jars, scented candles to keep my drawing room fresh and appealing. I can’t afford an Ila Menon painting, but I can certainly put up a wall art to fill my bedroom with life.”

Purnima Avantika, a homemaker and resident of Palsapali said, “Gracing my bedroom with green plants, dwarf fruit plants, swastik symbols and rangoli is an attempt to drive evil spirits away. I know of this as my father-in-law is a Vastu specialist. We keep the doors of our mandir, which is in the bedroom, closed with a silk screen. Each and every type decoration has a deep meaning. Home decor is all the more important now as the festivities of Diwali and Durga puja nears. It’s just that people have to buy the right fit for their walls.”

Pandit Jayant Sahu, a Vastu expert in Sri Jagannath Astrology & Vastu said, “Dwarf oranges and lemon trees are very pious as they spread a positive energy across the house that they are fitted in.”

However, the science of Vastu decor is not as appealing to some critical minds. Reema Soni, a student of Trident Engineering College, said, “Budget home decors are a great attraction for everyone. Although I don’t believe in Vastu, modern artificial flowers and glass jars filled with pebbles does attract me. My family members are also fond of these decorations.”

Ajay Beuran, a businessman of Satyanagar said that Indian families are diverse in their taste of interior designing. This makes Budget home decorations their easiest preference. It’s difficult to describe all, but they do look good inside the home. My friends and family members do complement me for having a great taste in interior designs, he added.
