Cuttack: The student traffic volunteers would soon work in regional transport offices (RTOs) to make motor vehicle owners aware of traffic rules and help them to get driving licences.
“We have initiated the process to engage student traffic volunteers in RTOs. The volunteers will get an allowance of Rs 100 each per day,” said Transport Commissioner Sanjeev Panda.
According to Panda, the traffic volunteers would manage special helpdesks at RTOs. “Their primary task would be to make motor vehicle owners aware of traffic rules and help the latter get licences and other relevant documents. We will organise a 10-day training programme for the volunteers,” Panda said.
The Odisha Police had launched the student traffic volunteer scheme in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in 2017. These volunteers assist traffic police personnel at busy squares in two shifts.
The scheme was subsequently extended to other cities and towns like Puri, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Balasore and Koraput.
