We all are aware what a ringtone is. A ringtone is the sound made by a telephone to indicate an incoming call or text message. Not literally a tone or an actual (bell-like) ring any more, the term is most often used today to refer to customisable sounds used on mobile phones.

A ringtone maker allows a user to take a song from its personal collection, select whatever section he likes and send the file to the mobile phone. Files can be sent to the mobile phone by direct connection, for example through USB cable, Bluetooth, text messaging, or e-mail. There are a variety of websites that let users make ringtones from digital music or other sound files; they upload directly on mobile phones with no limit on the number of songs uploaded.

Different people have different choices and when it comes to ringtones it depends on the individual what kind of ringtone s/he wants. Some people prefer to keep their ringtones soft and soothing while others prefer a noisier one. Nowadays, we have so many ringtones to choose from. There was a time when there were only default ringtones (ringtones that were installed in the phone); but today we have a variety of options – we can set a portion of a movie song as ringtone or one can set his/her own name as a ringtone.

There are weird ringtones too and in the company of friends we all giggle at someone with a weird ringtone. Orissa POST asks youth what their favourite ringtones are…

Subrat Dash says he likes to keep his ringtone simple because he feels a loud ringtone is disturbing. “Most folks pick one of the default ringers that come with their phones or just leave the thing on vibrate. But increasingly, users are paying a premium – usually a buck or two a pop – to download custom songs, jingles and sound effects, turning their mobile phones into a pocket jukebox. I always chose my phone ringtone from the default list that are already installed in the phones. I think people who are mature will go for a sweet and simple rather than loud and filmy ringtone. The ringtone is not meant to reflect our larger musical taste,” says Subrat.

Everyone loves a good ringtone, but sometimes there are some parts of a song we prefer over other parts. Readymade ringtones may not give us the melodies or snippets we want. Sometimes they are too short, others too long, and unless a song is popular enough you won’t find ringtones of your choice,” says Happy Das from Cuttack.

“It’s been nearly four years that I have set a particular ringtone. I am a diehard lover of nature and I love songs with lyrics that extol the beauty of the sea and sky but the music should be soothing, sweet and romantic which will make you fall in love with nature,” she adds.
