Bhubaneswar, April 1: Motor vehicles population has witnessed tremendous rise over the years in the state on the back of growing economic prosperity and road connectivity, state Economic Survey said.
“As on March, 2015, the state had 52.27 lakh registered and 48.76 lakh on road vehicles. 5.17 lakh new vehicles were registered in 2014-15 with a growth rate of 6.38 per cent over 2013-14,” the Survey said.
However, it noted the vehicular population is unusually skewed towards two-wheelers. “More than 80 per cent of motor vehicles are two-wheelers followed by car and taxi, which was at 7 per cent,” it noted.
“During 2014-15, Rs 910.76 crore of motor vehicle revenue was collected against the target of Rs 972 crore,” the report said adding that the real collection was 6.5 per cent higher than the previous year.
On road connectivity, the survey pointed out that National Highways (NH) constitutes only 2 per cent of road network in the state.
“41 NHs traverse through Orissa with a total length of 4,636.4 kms of which 3,174 kms and 1,462.3 kms length are in the control of NH wing of state and Centre respectively,” it said.
The Economic Survey also said that the state government has taken various measures to improve road and bridge infrastructure. Rs 1,500 crore was provided in 2015-16 for construction of new bridges on rural roads for providing all weather connectivity, it said.
