Bhubaneswar: As part of its drive against illegal hoardings in the city, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), has stumbled upon a new discovery from its own pool of staff.
Affectionately nicknamed “Spiderman’’ of the urban local body, Mohan Sahu (56) along with his friend Kalia (40) has developed a method to rip apart huge hoardings and bring them down as per the enforcement wing’s needs.
Mohan, a frail figure, wears glasses, but in reality he has nerves made of metal as he never backs out from climbing hoardings of any dimension.
Hailing from Jagannath Prasad in Ganjam district, he has been serving the ULB for over three decades. The BMC-BDA joint enforcement team Thursday dismantled rooftop hoardings along the Rajmahal-Bapuji Nagar stretch and helped the authorities in grounding 16 structures near Sishu Bhawan Square Friday with the help of Mohan.
“I am not sure whether I am as fast as the reel-life hero, but I have no acrophobia (fear for heights) and that helps me go up the buildings and dismantle any illegal board. However, if alternatives are available, I take their help.’’ BMC additional commissioner (in-charge of revenue and taxation) Alok Kumar Kar says “Mohan and his team are engaged in removing hoardings in our enforcement squad. They help us in enforcing the norms against illegal advertisements set by the Supreme Court’s panel on Road Safety. The state government has also issued guidelines to ULBs and Collectors on the hoardings.’’
A senior BMC official added that as the city is cyclone-prone, rooftop hoardings have become a menace and as per the apex court norms it is mandatory to remove them to ensure safety measures.
