Mining in Chikima hills triggers livelihood crisis in Koraput villages

Koraput: Serious concerns have been raised by villagers of Kankadaguda under Nandapur block in Koraput district over ongoing quarrying and mining activities in the nearby Chikima hills, which they allege are destroying both their homes and livelihoods amid administrative inaction. Kankadaguda, located in the remote tribal belt of southern Odisha, is surrounded by dense forests, hills, and small settlements like Kumbharaguda and Kadamagura. The region is known for poor connectivity and heavy dependence on forest resources. For generations, villagers have relied on Chikima hills for collecting firewood, dry leaves, and wild fruits, which they sell at nearby markets such as Jayantgiri to sustain their families.

However, recent mining and blasting operations allegedly carried out by private companies in the area have severely impacted their interests in the forest. According to the villagers, nearly seven surrounding villages depend on these hills for their daily livelihood, making the issue one of survival rather than mere inconvenience. Wednesday, Kamala Gathua, along with several villagers, approached the District Collector Manoj Satyaban Mahajan, highlighting their plight.

Villagers alleged that continuous blasting has led to visible cracks in their houses, creating fear and insecurity among residents. “We are unable to live peacefully due to the loud noise of machines and explosions. Pollution levels have also increased drastically,” said Gathua during the submission of their grievance. They further claimed that despite repeated appeals to stop the activities, neither the companies nor local officials paid attention to their concerns. The lack of timely intervention from the administration has intensified public anger, with many accusing authorities of neglecting tribal communities. The affected families also stated that they own agricultural land near the hills, which is now under threat due to ongoing excavation.

With their primary source of income at risk and living conditions deteriorating, villagers are demanding immediate suspension of mining activities and a thorough investigation into the matter. The incident once again highlights the ongoing conflict between development projects and the rights of indigenous communities in remote areas, where lack of governance continues to deepen public distress.
