Balimela: Tension mounted on the premises of the primary health centre (PHC) here in Malkangiri district over the death of a patient Thursday.
According to reports, Raju Bagha of ward-9 of Balimela Notified Area Council (NAC) was brought to the PHC after he experienced severe pain in his stomach. However, the kin found no doctors at the PHC and took him to the residence of a doctor on the premises. Though the doctor administered him first aid, the patient died after a while. This sparked outrage among the patient’s relatives.
Alleging medical negligence, the relatives and locals created ruckus at the hospital. The doctor prescribed wrong medicine as he didn’t examine the patient properly, said the angry kin.
On being informed, Orkel police station IIC Sumitra Jena and other police officials reached the spot and held talks with the family members. Additional district medical officer Amarendra Mohanty and district surgery department head Anil Mishra also reached the spot.
The officials promised to take up the issue with the Collector and said a probe would be initiated. Action would be taken against the doctor if he is found guilty, they added.
Dr Ansari Majhi, who treated the patient, said he tried his best to save the life of the patient and the allegation of negligence is baseless.
Raju was working as a sweeper in the NAC for the last 20 years. NAC chairperson Laxmi Pangi handed over Rs 5,000 under Harishchandra Yojana to the wife of the deceased and promised a job to one of his family members.
