Bhubaneswar: Acting on the directives of BJD president Naveen Patnaik, the party Sunday suspended Sarojini Tarai, chairperson of Krushnaprasad block under the Brahmagiri Assembly constituency in Puri district, for alleged anti-party activities.
An official party order stated that Tarai has been suspended from the Biju Janata Dal with immediate effect for activities deemed contrary to the party’s interests and discipline.
The decision underscores the leadership’s emphasis on organisational discipline and adherence to party principles.
The order, issued by the party headquarters, was signed by senior leader Pratap Jena, BJD vice president (headquarters), on behalf of the party president.

The communication reiterated that the action was taken in line with Patnaik’s directives.
Party sources said the leadership has taken a firm stand against indiscipline and anti-party conduct, particularly at the grassroots level, as the BJD moves to strengthen its organisational structure across Odisha. No immediate response was available from Tarai at the time of fi ling this report.
The latest suspension comes close on the heels of similar disciplinary action taken by the BJD leadership in recent months.
In January, party president Naveen Patnaik had ordered the suspension of two sitting MLAs—Arvind Mohapatra and Sanatan Mahakud—for alleged anti-party activities, a move that had raised eyebrows ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections.
While the party did not spell out specific charges in that case either, the decision was widely seen as a message that the leadership would act decisively against dissent and indiscipline within the organisation.
With these actions, the BJD appears to be reinforcing internal discipline as it navigates key political challenges in the state.
