Bhubaneswar: Acting on a tip-off, Intelligence unit of Excise Department Wednesday seized about 45gms of brown sugar from a peddler in Haldipadia slum under the Laxmisagar police limits here.
The cops have also arrested a man in connection with this.
The accused has been identified as Sanjay Mohanty, a resident of the slum. He is a ‘repeat offender’ who had been arrested for the same offence before. At the time of his arrest, he was out on bail.
According to a member of the squad, the cost of the seized item is about Rs 4.5 lakh.
It may be mentioned here is this slum is fast turning into a drugs hub in the city. Although the police have made some seizures and arrested a number of people in the past, the illegal trade continues unabated.
Even though the office of Zone-4 ACP lies inside Laxmi Sagar police station and is very close to the slum, the smugglers have little fear of law, as it appears from the ever-rising cases of drug peddling and related petty crimes in the area.
