Bhubaneswar, Feb 2: In view of the importance of wetlands from ecological point of view, the Nandankanan Zoological Park here celebrated the World Wetland Day on the bank of Kanjia Lake here Friday.
Nandankanan Biological Park director SK Acharya who was the chief guest on the occasion discussed the importance of wetlands on the basis of this year’s theme.
Dr Siba Prasad Parida (RMNH) who attended the meeting as guest of honour emphasised the need to conserve wetlands in general and Kanjia lake in particular in the interest of water management of the locality.
The event themed “Wetlands for sustainable urban future” was attended by school students, mediapersons and staff of Nandankanan Zoo.
An interactive quiz programme on “Wetlands” was conducted among the students by Michael Peters, WWF state coordinator.
AK Parida, ACF (VM), Dr RK Mohapatra, biologist, and MK Panda, education officer, Nandankanan also participated. Prizes were distributed among the winners of the quiz programme.
DCF KL Purohit, Nandankanan biological park, discussed the theme and the conservation strategy adopted by the department. Veterinary officer Balaram Sahu emphasized the methodology to conserve wetlands and their role in our economy.
The zoo deputy director greeted the participants. ACF A K Mohanty proposed a vote of thanks.
