Bhubaneswar: Hockey Orissa registered a comprehensive 4-1 victory against Hockey Bihar in a Pool D encounter on the third day of the VIIIth Sub-Junior Men’s National hockey championship (Division A) at Saifai, Uttar Pradesh Friday.
Orissa started the match on a positive note as they dominated the proceedings right from the start with Sumit Toppo giving them the lead in the 26th minute. The second half was more interesting as Orissa pumped in three more goals to take the match away from Bihar. Niranjan Kindo (44th), Laban Lugun (47th) and Rohit Beck (50th) were the scorers. However, Bihar pulled one back in the 58th minute through Turtan Minz, but it was too late by then.
In a Pool A match, Hockey Gangpur lost 2-7 against Sports Authority of India (SAI), thanks to a hat-trick by Sarada Nand. Kallu Ali gave SAI the lead in the 25th minute. Ranjan Toppo doubled the lead in the 29th minute before Tiwari made it 3-0 two minutes later. Skipper Sudeep Chirmako pulled one back for Gangpur in the 33rd minute to go into the break with a 1-3 scoreline for Orissa.
Chirmako scored the second for Gangpur in the 49th minute but SAI came back strongly to put in four more goals to dash all hopes for Gangpur. Tiwari scored two more in 51st and 56th minutes to complete his hat-trick while Rahul Singh Yadav (68th) and Mahipal (78th) scored one goal each in the 68th and 70th minute.
Meanwhile, Hockey Orissa thumped Hockey Bhopal 6-0 in another Pool D encounter which was scheduled January 17. The match which started that day had to be stopped midway due to heavy fog and was completed Friday. Niranjan Kindo (third), Paulus Lakra (28th), Matiyas Dang (37th), Subas Barla (48th), Niranjan Kindo (58th) and Liban Ekka (66th) scored for Orissa.

Orissa men’s basketball team suffered their second loss of the tournament as they were handed 71-85 defeat against Rajasthan on the third day of the 68th Senior National Basketball championship at Chennai, Thursday.
