Couple tries to sell babies at SCB

Cuttack: A couple from Banta area of Bhadrak district Tuesday tried to sell their two newborn daughters at Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital here.
However, timely intervention by the officials District Legal Services Authority, Child Line and police foiled the bid.
Sources said a woman from Banta area of Bhadrak was admitted to SCBMCH April 29 with labour pain. She gave birth to three girls that day. The couple immediately tried to search for some issueless couples to sell two of their newborns.
According to sources, at least nine people reached the hospital and showed their interest to take the two babies by providing `40,000 each. Even, a few of them visited a local court to collect stamp papers to fulfill the paper works for the baby sale.
However, district Legal Services Authority advocate Bipin Choudhury somehow came to know about the baby sale bid and informed it to Child Line officials and Mangalabagh police.
Soon, officials of Child Line and police reached the hospital and counselled the couple.
It is learnt that the couple expressed their inability to raise the three babies. “The financial status of the couple is not so good. They have also two more daughters at home. We have advised them to hand over the two babies to interested parties as per the rules and regulations of the child adoption act,” said an official of the Child Line. Meanwhile, sources claimed that a few employees of a private nursing home in the city had played the role of middlemen in the baby sale bid.
