Chhendipada: In a shocking incident, a youth allegedly beat up his mother to death at Ugi village under Jarpada police limits in Angul district Tuesday after she refused to give him money for buying liquor.
The deceased was identified as Surekha Mahar (70), mother of Ranjan Mahar of Nua Mahar Sahi of the village.
According to police, Ranjan was a habitual drunkard and often created nuisance in home. The incident occurred when Surekha returned home with her old-age pension. Ranjan, who followed her from rear, came home and asked Surekha for money to buy liquor.
An altercation ensued between the mother and the son after she declined his demand. In a fit of rage, Ranjan beat her up mercilessly, leading to her death on the spot. Later, he hid her body in the house and took it to a nearby crematorium at night.
He had set the body on fire when police reached the spot and seized the half-burnt body. Ranjan tried to flee and hid himself in a school but was arrested soon.
Police started a probe after registering a murder case. The body was sent for post-mortem and a forensic team was pressed into service.
