Doc botches up surgery, demands Rs 20k for a redo

Berhampur: Tension mounted on the premises of MKCG Medical College and Hospital here in Ganjam district Wednesday after a patient’s relative accused a doctor of demanding bribe of Rs 20,000 for a surgery. The allegations against the doctor spread outrage in the hospital for a while.

According to sources, Kasturi Chaudhary of Kashinagar in Gajapati district was admitted to orthopedics ward in the hospital with a fractured leg a few days back. The orthopedic surgeon advised a surgery on his leg and asked the attendants to arrange Rs 60,000 for the same. However, the surgery was conducted free of cost after Chaudhary produced his Kishan health card.

To his misfortune, the doctors performed the surgery in a callous manner and botched it up, according to the attendants. They again approached the doctor who conducted the surgery.

Instead of admitting his mistake, the doctor demanded Rs 20,000 to operate the leg again, Chaudhary’s relative Nanadi Chaudhary complained. Later, the relatives with the help of some social workers approached MKCG superintendent and lodged a complaint in this regard.

The agitation was called off after superintendent Charan Panda assured to probe the incident and take necessary action.
