Cuttack, Feb 10: Frequent protests by students and scuffles have earned a bad name for Ravenshaw University – once admired the best in imparting quality education.
Study atmosphere of the university has taken a beating thanks to frequent stirs and campus violence in recent days. A disciplinary committee, formed to resolve students’ issues and take action against unrully students, has failed to serve the purpose.
As many as 15 students have sustained injuries in four instances of scuffles between February 2014 and February 10, 2015. Five students were injured in a scuffle broke out in February 2014. Similarly, four students had sustained grievous injuries in April 25 brawl. Three students were critically injured in October 15 scuffle. Besides, a fracas erupted January 28 this year left three students injured.
Agitations at regular intervals on the varsity premises have vitiated the study atmosphere during the period. The university had witnessed several protests over irregularities in semester examinations in April, row over self-financing courses in October, protests over semester questions which were not part of curriculum in November and irregularities at New PG Hostel in December. Most recently, students of Information Science and Technology laid siege to vice-chancellor’s office alleging several irregularities at the department.
Students’ union vice-president Sibani Sahu said the varsity authorities’ failure to come up with measures to avoid campus violence and sort out basic problems prompts students to take to the streets.
Students’ union president Sthitapragyan Das said repeated pleas before the authorities to impose restrictions on outsiders’ entry have yielded no results. Frequent entry of outsiders has led to campus violence, Das added.
When asked, the varsity vice-chancellor Prakash Chandra Sarangi said a disciplinary committee has been formed to take action against students infuriating unrest.
