Baripada: Pedestrians and commuters have a harrowing time on major streets in Baripada town in Mayurbhanj district due to haphazard parking and encroachments.
The street vendors have encroached upon the bulk of space on major thoroughfares, thereby squeezing the lanes meant for commuters.
“Encroachers have occupied the bulk of space on both sides of the road at different parts. This is creating problems for us during peak hours,” said Bansidhar Barik, a local resident.
Lack of stringent action including eviction drive is likely to create problems for residents as well as devotees during the upcoming Rath Yatra festival which is celebrated in a grand manner here.
According to residents, local administration and shopping malls are equally responsible for traffic chaos because of the lack of proper parking spaces.
Baripada municipality chairperson Babita Das claimed that adequate steps are being taken to streamline traffic movement in the town.
“We are aware of such traffic problems. We will soon meet SP and collector for carrying out a joint eviction drive so that the roads are made encroachment-free before the Rath Yatra festival,” said Das.
