Formalin scare: Samples collected from Puri, Rayagada

Puri: A joint team of Public Health Department, fisheries and marine fisheries Friday carried out simultaneous raids at different outlets in Puri town and nearby areas. Samples of fishes were collected and sent to Bhubaneswar for test.

The team comprising of Assistant District Fishery officer (Marine) Debendra Behera, Assistant Fishery officer Subhashree Das and Food Safety Officer Rajeswari Pati conducted raids at fish markets near Station bazaar, Swargadwar and Penthakata and collected five samples.

Besides collecting samples the officials also made the vendors and the customers aware about the harmful effects of eating formalin-laced fish.

Similarly, samples of different varieties of fishes were collected after carrying out raids at various markets and outlets at Over Bridge Bazaar and daily market in Rayagada district. The samples were also sent for examination to Bhuabenswar based food testing laboratory.

Notably, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Secretary Vishal Gagan July 13 had confirmed the presence of formalin in Pomfret fish samples collected from Unit-4 fish market in Bhubaneswar.
