New Delhi: With the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the ministry of shipping and German Railways Deutsche Bahn to modernise the rail-port connectivity across the country, the Paradip Port in Orissa is likely to get assistance under the scheme.
Paradip is one of the 12 major ports in the country which is among the top five performing ports in terms of their profits. The ministry has also planned to assist construction and upgrade 10 rail tracks meant to help rail-port connectivity in the state.
Projects which will give impetus to the Paradip port include Angul-Sukinda Road tracks, new line from Haridaspur to Paradip and track from Jharsuguda to Barpalli to strengthen the existing lines. The German assistance may also aid the ongoing projects through their expertise in addition to
funding.
Shipping minister Nitin Gadkari Friday held detailed discussions with his German counterpart and infrastructure minister Alexander Dobrindt and his delegation in New Delhi and announced the two countries will work together on projects worth `1 lakh crore being implemented by the Indian port rail corporation Ltd (IPRCL).
Friday’s meeting comes in the backdrop of an MoU signed between IPRCL and German Railways Deutsche Bahn (DB) for cooperation on modernisation of rail port connectivity and port rail facilities of Indian ports, during the Maritime India Summit earlier this year.
The ministry claims for efficient evacuation of cargo from the ports and to reduce logistics cost, last-mile rail connectivity of ports is extremely important. IPRCL has been set up specifically to work in this area.
