Girl ends life after obscene video goes viral

Nischintakoili: A Plus-II girl committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of her room after her obscene video went viral at a village under Salipur police limits in Cuttack district Friday night.

Family members under the pressure of local leaders hurriedly cremated the body in the same night without informing the police. The matter came to the fore after Debashis Beura lodged a complaint in the police station Saturday.

Police launched a probe on the complaint and will register a case if the charges are proved correct, Salipur IIC Debendra Mallick said. Various opinions have surfaced after her death as some claimed she was murdered instead of suicide.

The victim hailing from a Dalit family had appeared the Plus-II final year examination from a college in Nischintakoili. She developed relationship with a local youth, a tractor driver by profession and the son of an Anganwadi worker after the latter lured her into physical relationship on the pretext of marriage.

The youth meanwhile had shot the videos of their intimate moments.

He however, went back on his promise and insisted on keeping physical relationship to which she denied. This led to a bitter fight between the two but the girl insisted on marriage first before giving in to his demands.

Enraged, the youth planned to teach her a lesson and released the video in social media. The video soon became the talk in the area when some youths after watching the video proposed to her for physical relationship.

The accused accompanied by some youths even visited her house and threatened to kill her.

Greatly distressed at the turn of events, the victim finally committed suicide by hanging Friday night. Her father being a member of a political party in the area is alleged to have been influenced by some political leaders to suppress the incident.
