A 19-year-old ITI student from Ratanpura Kalyanpur village in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh died by suici*e after jumping from the Hathinikund Barrage Thursday afternoon. Her body was recovered from the Western Yamuna Canal after a search operation lasting nearly four hours with the help of divers.
The video of the incident has gone viral on the internet. In the footage, Shivani can be seen jumping into the canal with her back to the barrage. As she falls, the voices of bystanders can be heard. People present at the spot tried to stop her and convince her, but she refused to listen. After speaking on her mobile phone for a while, she suddenly jumped into the water.

Three youths standing nearby leapt into the canal with ropes to try and save her, but the strong current prevented them from reaching her. Upon receiving information, Pratap Nagar police rushed to the site and launched a search operation. Bystanders said Shivani had been walking back and forth on the barrage for some time before moving toward the canal near the control room.
Her bag, containing her Aadhaar card and other documents, was recovered from the spot. Police have begun an investigation and are trying to determine the reason behind the suicide.
