Cuttack: Kalia, one of the separated conjoined twins Jaga-Kalia, is not keeping well, informed SCB Medical College and Hospital Superintendent Dr CBK Mohanty Friday.
The health condition of Kalia has turned critical as he is suffering from chest infection and has been put on ventilator support, Dr Mohanty informed.
The conjoined twins hail from Milipada village in Kandhamal district. They were separated after a marathon 21-hour long separation surgery by a medical team at AIIMs in New Delhi, October 25, 2017.
The twins returned to Odisha September 7 after undergoing treatment for two years at AIIMS. They were then admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital and were kept under observation. A six-member team comprising specialists from neurosurgery, neurology, surgery and pediatrics department has been assigned to ensure proper treatment of the two at the hospital.
The craniopagus twins had left for AIIMS, New Delhi July 13, 2017 with the help of the Odisha Government.
It should be stated here that conjoined twins are a rarity. It usually happens once in between 49,000 births to 1, 89, 000 births. Such births are usually found at a higher rate in Southwest Asia and Africa.
