Sonepur: A 34-yearold man was stabbed to death following an altercation in Binika town of Subarnapur district late Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Shambhu Meher, a resident of Nuapada in Binika. His younger brother, Gautam, lodged a complaint at Binika police station Wednesday morning, accusing three persons, Amit Bharasagar, Tunu Ranabira and Rakesh Bhesra of Bhima Bhoi Nagar in Binika, of committing the crime.
Police registered a case (26/2016) and detained Rakesh Bhesra for questioning. A scientific team from Bolangir assisted in the investigation.
Subarnapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Narayan Nayak informed the media Wednesday that a probe is underway to ascertain the involvement of others and examine various aspects of the killing.
“The body was handed over to the family following a post-mortem. Tension, however, prevailed in the town following the incident,” the SP said.
According to police, the incident took place near a pond adjacent to Binika Women’s College.
Shambhu reportedly had an argument with the three accused over past enmity, which later escalated.
During the clash, the accused allegedly stabbed Shambhu in the abdomen, neck and back, causing severe bleeding. He collapsed at the spot.
Tunu and Amit also sustained injuries in the incident.
All three were taken to the Binika community health centre in an ambulance, where doctors declared Shambhu dead.
As the condition of Tunu and Amit was stated to be critical, they were shifted to Burla hospital for advanced treatment.
Sub-inspector Prabhati Dash is investigating the case.
Binika IIC Satya Narayan Pradhan said further investigation is underway.
