Berhampur: A rare spine surgery was successfully performed at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, restoring mobility to a farmer from Rayagada district. Baida Nayak, 50, of Andirakanch village in Kashipur block, had developed stiffness in his legs and weakness on his left side in June, which gradually left him unable to walk.
Initial treatment in Koraput brought no improvement, and he was referred to MKCG in August.
Examinations at the neurosurgery department, headed by Dr. Rabinarayan Panda, revealed he had meningiomas, a rare spinal tumour that can cause paralysis if untreated. Last Friday, Dr. Panda led a five-member team in removing a four-inch tumour from Nayak’s spine in a three-hour operation.

Hospital authorities said the surgery was successful and Nayak, now able to walk again, is under observation. He will be discharged after full recovery.
