Moderate earthquake jolts Koraput

Koraput: A moderate earthquake measuring 4.4 magnitude struck the Koraput district late Saturday night, triggering panic in several towns and villages, with tremors also felt in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, officials said Sunday.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at 11:31 pm IST April 4.

The epicentre was located near Koraput at a shallow depth of about 5 km, intensifying its impact despite the moderate magnitude.

Tremors were widely felt across the district, including in Sunabeda, Semiliguda, Pottangi, Nandapur, Damanjodi, Lamtaput, Jeypore and Baipariguda areas. Residents reported buildings shaking and household items rattling for several seconds.

Eyewitnesses described hearing a rumbling sound before and during the quake.

Many people rushed out of their homes and gathered in open spaces as a precaution.

The impact extended beyond Odisha, with tremors reported in parts of Andhra Pradesh, including Araku Valley, Paderu, Pedabayalu and Hukumpeta, raising concern in border areas.

Mild tremors were also reported in parts of Malkangiri district, including Kudumulugumma, Mathili, Korukonda and Chitrakonda areas.

Residents said the quake lasted about 6 to 8 seconds, with some lightweight objects falling from shelves.

Authorities said no casualties or major property damage had been reported.

Officials added that the situation is being monitored and urged residents to remain calm while staying alert.

Experts said the shallow depth contributed to the stronger surface impact.

The quake has renewed focus on disaster preparedness and public awareness in earthquake-prone areas of southern Odisha.

Authorities advised residents not to panic and to follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
