New tech to treat pancreatic disease

Bhubaneswar: “Pancreatic disease needs proper attention or else it can be life-threatening,” Manoj Kumar Sahu, a gastroenterologist, said here, Monday.

Addressing a press conference at a hospital, he said that Odisha now has technologies like SpyGlass DS, Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS) and advanced ERCP which could treat such diseases or minimise the risk of pancreatic cancer without surgery. “These are economic too,” Sahu mentioned.

Highlighting the merits of SpyGlass DS technology, he pointed out that it allowed just one operator to perform all the procedures as well as guide devices to examine, diagnose and treat pancreaticobiliary conditions.

“While therapeutic EUS, a hybrid technology, provides more information than any other imaging tests by providing detailed images of the digestive tract, it also gives information about the conditions of chest, stomach, pancreas, gallbladder and kidney,” he underlined. Speaking about advanced ERCP, Sahu said, “ERCP is used primarily to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts, including gallstones, inflammatory strictures, leaks and cancer.”
