No lead in tribal girl’s rape case, accused roaming free

Boipariguda: Even three weeks past the alleged rape of a Class VIII tribal girl at Baruabadi village under Dasmantpur panchayat in Koraput district, the local police have failed to arrest the accused. He is roaming around the village and forcing the victim and her family members to withdraw the case, locals said.

Locals and relatives of the victim have threatened to stage a demonstration if the accused was not arrested soon.

The incident occurred April 24. Dev Gadaba (25), a married man, has been accused of abducting and outraging the modesty of the girl. When the girl complained about this to his wife, the woman abused her and assaulted her in full public view.

Village heads called a meeting over the issue. Sensing trouble, the accused escaped from the scene and did not attend the meeting.

Later, a complaint was lodged with the police. Instead of arresting the accused, the police have asked the girl’s father to give them a phone call if and when he saw the accused in the locality again, family members alleged.
