IMD sounds heatwave alert in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The regional centre of IMD in Bhubaneswar Sunday issued an Orange Warning for severe heatwave conditions in several districts of Odisha.

Upto 8.30 AM of June 12: As per the Orange Warning (be prepared), heatwave to severe heatwave condition is very likely to prevail at one or two places over Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir and Keonjhar districts.

As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), heatwave condition is very likely to prevail at one or two places over Sundargarh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Nayagarh, and Mayurbhanj districts.

Impact and action suggested:

1) Heat is tolerable for general public but slight health concern for vulnerable people (eg: infants, elderly and sick people)

2) It is advised to avoid heat exposure, keep cool and avoid dehydration.

3) Farmers are advised to continue irrigation activities in sugarcane, summer maize, pulses along with other crops and vegetables.

4) Livestock and domestic animals may be kept in proper shelters to avoid heat exposure.

Besides, as per the Yellow Warning (be updated), thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Kalahandi districts.

In the same timeframe, light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is very likely to occur at one or two places over Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts. Dry weather is very likely to prevail over the remaining districts of the state.

From 8.30 AM of June 12 to 8.30 AM of June 13: As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), heatwave to severe heatwave condition is very likely to prevail at one or two places over Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir and Keonjhar districts.

Besides, as per the Yellow Warning (be updated), thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts.

In the same time frame, light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is very likely to occur at one or two places over Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore and Bhadrak districts. Dry weather is very likely to prevail over the remaining districts of the state.

The weather agency forecasted no large change in maximum temperature (day temperature) over next three days and a slight fall thereafter over the districts of Odisha.

The maximum temperature is likely to be above normal range by 4-6 degree Celsius at a few places in the state over the next three days. Consequently, hot and humid weather is likely over the next three days. People are advised to take precautionary measures while going outside from 11am to 3pm.

In Bhubaneswar, for the next 24 hours, a partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershower is predicted by IMD. Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 41 degree Celsius and 27 degree Celsius respectively.

In the last 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature of 44.8 degree Celsius was recorded at Jharsuguda while the lowest minimum temperature of 22.9 degree Celsius was recorded at Balasore, the bulletin informed.
