Odisha rains alert: IMD Bhubaneswar flags Red Warning; flash flood, waterlogging likely

Bhubaneswar: The regional centre of IMD in Bhubaneswar issued Red Warning for several districts of Odisha in its weather bulletin.

Upto 8.30 AM of August 3: As per the Red Warning (take action), heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) at a few places over the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Bolangir, Subarnapur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Boudh.

Besides, isolated extremely heavy rainfalls (>20cm) are very likely to occur over Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Bolangir, Subarnapur and Sambalpur districts.

As per the Orange Warning (be prepared), heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places in Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Kalahandi and Kandhamal districts.

As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Nabarangpur and Jajpur districts.

In the same timeframe, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of the state.

From 8.30 AM of August 3 to 8.30 AM of August 4: As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over Sundergarh, Jharsuguda and Bargarh districts.

In the same time frame, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at many places over the districts of interior Odisha and at a few places over the districts of coastal Odisha.

The weather agency suggested the following impacts and actions regarding the weather forecast.

  1. Flash floods or water logging in low-lying areas, inundation of agriculture fields, and mudslides or landslides in vulnerable hilly areas are likely.
  2.  Possibility of some damage to informal or kutcha roads, wall collapse of vulnerable kutcha houses.
  3. Water logging in underpass roads and occasional reduction of visibility may cause traffic congestion in urban areas.
  4. It may lead to significant rise in water level of rivers.
  5. Keep arrangements for drainage of excess water.
  6. Avoid movement in affected areas, and stay in safe place.
  7. Postpone fertilizer or chemical application in agricultural fields and keep livestock in a safe place.

In Bhubaneswar, for the next 24 hours, a partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershower is predicted by IMD. Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 28 degree Celsius and 24 degree Celsius respectively.

In the last 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature of 33.0 degree Celsius was recorded at Balasore while the lowest minimum temperature of 20.0 degree Celsius was recorded at Angul, the bulletin informed.
