Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Wednesday directed the Jail IG to submit the inquiry report on the suicide of under trial prisoner (UTP) Jitendra Biswal, (33), within six weeks. Biswal was found hanging from an iron railing in the jail toilet.
The next hearing of the case will be on July 4.
Biswal died under suspicious circumstances on May 12 while under judicial custody at the Jharpada Jail. The jail authorities reported the incident as a suicide, but the victim’s family suspected foul play.
The administration and security staff of the Bhubaneswar Special Jail at Jharpada is under the scanner after his death.
Biswal was lodged in Jharpada jail since 2013. It was reported that he was under tremendous stress after being convicted for seven years RI in a fraud case. Moreover, he was also facing trial in a gang rape case under Section 376.
Biswal’s father said, “I want justice for my son and an open trial.”
