BHUBANESWAR: With the success of his debut rap album One kid with a dream,Orissa-born rapper Samir Rishu Mohanty,popularly known as Big Deal, has come up with his maiden Oriya rap piece Mu heli Odia. This sensational number has assumed an anthem status on the social media and among Oriya music lovers. The song, shot in Puri locales, was watched by over three lakh visitors in just three days. The song was visited by more than 1.6 lakh viewers on the first day of its release. The Oriya rap piece has been appreciated by all music lovers across the state. Interacting with Orissa POST, Big Deal Samir reveals he had planned the Oriya rap after seeing people’s spontaneous response to his first album. It was shot in parts at Bangalore and Darjeeling in addition to locales in Puri. Soon after the release of the rap, officials of Orissa Tourism department acknowledged the video among others.
“It virtually depicts Orissa as a cultural and tourist hub. The video has visuals of Oriya dessert Rasagulla, clips from Rath Yatra, Oriya cuisine, Abhada Bhog at Srimandir, Puri beach and Chilika among others. Born in Puri, the 27-year-old’s mother is a Japanese and father an Oriya. He had set fis foot on the rapping journey when he was hardly 16 and released his first album One kid with a dreamin January thisyear.
It was watched by millions to this day. Groomed in Darjeeling and now residing in Bengaluru, Mohanty claims his lyrics evince his childhood and adolescent dreams. “Mistaken as a Korean for my small eyes, I take pride in claiming myself as a born Oriya,” says Samir. For him rapping is not just reciting modern poetry in a rhythmic way…through rap you can generate thoughts and express your intense feelings. Renowned rappers like Eminem, Jay-Z, Dr Gre and Kany West express their emotions in a vigorous rap style. Samir is keen on giving vent to the common man’s emotions through his word and song. We do not see this in the socalled Hindi film raps or in Oriya albums. ‘‘I want to show the beauty and culture of Orissa and will do so continuously,’’ he avers. Mohanty comes to limelight after singing rap in Hindi film Byomkesh Bakshi. He had also collaborated with rap artistes like Hard Kaur and Blaze. He is being roped in for a T-series rap album and other Kannada films.
