Bhubaneswar: Orissa rode on a whirlwind half century by Pragyan Paramita Mohanty (50 n o, 33b, 7×4) to beat Punjab by seven wickets in a match of the Senior Women’s T20 League cricket tournament at Chennai, Saturday.
Opting to bat first, Punjab could manage only 122 runs for the loss of three wickets despite a brilliant innings by Tania Bhatia (85 n o, 62b, 12×4, 1×6). However, the other batswomen failed to support her. Sujata Mallick (1/21) turned out to be the best bowler for Orissa.
Orissa batswomen put up a team effort to reach victory target with 15 balls to spare. Pragyan was well-supported by Sarita Meher (21) and Sushree Pradhan (20 n o).
Brief scores: Punjab 122/3 (Tania Bhatia 85 n o; Sujata Mallick 1/21) lost to Orissa 126/3 (Pragyan Paramita Mohanty 50 n o; Diksa Dogra 1/20) by seven wickets.
Orissa boys emerge champs
Orissa boys bagged the title in the National Level U-14 Rugby Championships, which concluded Saturday at Hyderabad. In the final, Orissa boys defeated Maharashtra 10-5. Earlier in the semifinal they had defeated Tamil Nadu by an identical margin.
However, the Orissa girls had to be satisfied with a third-place finish after beating Maharashtra 10-5 in the third and fourth play-off match.
Jayant triumphs
Jayant Kumar Das emerged champion in the open category of the Mayurbhanj District Chess Championships, which ended Saturday at Baripada,. Anubrata Priyadarshan finished runner-up while Lolan Prasad Saha was third.
In the junior segment, K Komeshu clinched the title. Prashant Barik secured the second position and Aswini Behera finished third.
